Food For Thought

I often wonder if carefully thinking about the foods we eat would change our eating habits. Many of us have aches and pains that annoy us. Some of us have gut issues that wreak havoc with our bodies. It’s worth thinking about the cause and effect of what we consume. The connection has been scientifically proven, but are we willing to make a few dietary changes to feel our best? Inflammation could be at the root of these problems. Certain foods are anti-inflammatory and are helpful to lessen pain or stomach issues that may plague us.  With summer upon us, healthy and tasty options are available. While enjoying the foods, it could be helpful to keep a journal so that you can see which ones agree with you and which ones increase your issues. This is the perfect time to eat a cool crisp salad made with swiss chard, kale, and arugula. Top it with some grilled salmon, beets, and blueberries. Make a salad dressing with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, walnuts, cinnamon, grated or powdered turmeric, and grated ginger. Dress the salad and sprinkle with a few chia seeds. You have just created an anti-inflammatory powerhouse, which is beautiful as well. Enjoy your artistry! Vegan dieters can substitute a bevy of steamed vegetables for the salmon. Roasted broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, or cauliflower are delicious alternatives.   Golden Paste  ½ cup turmeric powder  1 cup water  1/3 cup coconut oil  2–3 tablespoons black pepper  2 teaspoons cinnamon  1–2 teaspoons vanilla  1 tablespoon honey or     pure maple syrup to sweeten Heat the water and oil in a pot until warm. Add the spices and sweetener. It will form a thin or thick paste depending on the products you used. Either version works. Often the paste hardens to a colorful layered mix with the oil on top. If it hardens, just slice off a piece, which will melt in your coffee or warmed nut/dairy milk. It keeps in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.  You can start with a small amount of golden paste, working up to 1/2 tablespoon of golden paste for each cup of your warm beverage. If you like, add sweetener to taste. Golden paste makes your drink very filling and feels more like a meal.  Eating cleaner for your body’s requirements can make you feel lighter and possibly avoid future health issues. Now is the ideal time to test new healthier food options. A beautiful plethora of colors on your plate is sure to please even the most discerning palate. www.authorladawson.com
